Choosing a Career after 10+2

The time right after the board exams of class 12th is probably the most stressful time for students. There are endless discussions with family members on what stream to choose, hours spent online researching about growth prospects in various fields, trips to counselors, and tons of confusion. The choice you make after class 12th very often defines your entire life. Thus, it is important to choose wisely.
  • Here is a short guide which will help you make a better career decision after class 12th.

Explore your interests

The Indian education is such that you hardly get an opportunity to explore yourself. The couple of months you get after class 12th exams are the ideal time to explore your interests. Enroll in different programs and try to figure out what you love doing. For some, it could be computers, for others it could be designing; there could be some who are interested in research, so on and so forth. Once you identify your interests, it becomes easier to streamline your career options.

Don’t bother about prospects. There are prospects in every field

One of the most common career discussions in households is analyzing prospects for every stream. Adopting such an approach can be a disaster. You might end up with something that you that you don’t really like. The truth is, there are growth prospects in every field. Even if you pick up an unconventional option, you will find examples of people who are really doing well for themselves in that particular field.
If you are good at what you do, you will always succeed in that. Money always follows success.

Talk to a counselor or some seniors about what you are taught in a particular field

Most times, you are not very sure about what you are taught in a particular field. For example, if your interest lies in Chemistry and you choose to do an Honors course in Chemistry from Delhi University, it helps if you know what is the syllabi and future opportunities in the field. Get help from a counselor, or talk to some seniors in the same field.

They will be able to tell you all about it, helping you make an informed decision.

College matters!

Contrary to what most experts tell you out there, the reputation of a college you choose to study in matters. Ask a student who has done B.Com (Hons) from a second grade Delhi University college and you would know. Thus, it is always better to keep two to three career options open. If you can’t get a college of your choice in option A, you can always try for option B and option C.
Studying in a tier 1 college gives you an opportunity to be picked up by some of the best brands out there. They do not bother visiting tier 2 and tier 3 colleges. A tier 1 college also gives you a better exposure overall, which comes in handy for the rest of your life.
